White Distilled Vinegar is an effective and inexpensive cleaner for many different surfaces in your home, but if you are like me, the smell can be overpowering. I found a solution to this problem. This is the only cleaner that I use in my home now. It works great and I don't have to worry about the chemicals that are found in the products bought at the store!
1. Ingredients
Lemon (or other citrus) Peels
White Distilled Vinegar
Large jar
2. Chop all lemon peels into small sections.
3. Fill a large, wide mouth jar with the chopped lemon peels. (I make fresh squeezed lemonade every week, so I have plenty of lemon peels for this task.) Recipe here If you do not, you could collect them in a Ziploc bag or airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator until you have enough.
4. Cover the peels with white distilled vinegar.
5. Let brew for four weeks, shaking the jar occasionally to mix it up. Once the four weeks are up, strain the liquid mixture twice.
6. In a spray bottle mix equal parts of the mixture and water for a stronger clean. Put one cup of mixture with the rest of the bottle filled with water for normal cleaning. This makes a great window cleaner and counter top cleaner. I love to use it on my shower. Test surfaces first by just cleaning a small area.

I love this idea! Gonna try it when my remodeling is finished!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea too. I am going to try if just as soon as I get a batch of citrus fruits. Thank you for sharing such a great idea.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! Have you ever tried adding essential oils to your vinegar? I've had fairly good results with lavender.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! We are definitely trying this one.
ReplyDeleteGlad you guys like this. It is so easy to make. Erin, I haven't tried adding essential oils yet. I like the lemon so well. I have a lime scented one brewing now. I will need to try my lavender EE in the vinegar. I hear Tea Tree Oil is a great natural disinfectant.
ReplyDeleteAwesome Idea!
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT! I already use vinegar so this will be great! I am so sad that I just threw away a gazillion rinds from our box my aunt brought up from Arizona. Dang it! Maybe next time as these lemons weren't sprayed......I'll definitely be tagging this!
ReplyDeletethis is a great idea. I think I need to buy a bunch of lemons and make homemade lemonade just so I can do this!!
ReplyDeleteJaimie, Thanks! If you don't have a recipe for lemonade, this is the one I use. It is super yummy!!

Great idea! Thanks for sharing it! And perfect timing. I just emptied our lemon tree. I'll have plenty of peels to use in the next day or so. I hope you don't mind my passing this post along to some friends.
ReplyDeleteBetty that would be great. Feel free to use any posts that you like. I always enjoy reading your blog as well. Thanks, Melissa

Can you use store bought lemons or should I get organic lemons?
ReplyDeleteSabrina, Conventional lemons will certainly get the job done, it is just a matter of choice. There are some compelling reasons to choose organic produce, such as the overuse of agrochemicals in conventional produce production, improved soil health in organic agriculture and concerns over pesticide residues. Since I have changed the way I clean to be more natural, I don't want the possible pesticides in my cleaning products. Good luck making your cleaner.
